Get to know Pediatric Neurologist Dr. Ann B. Barnet in Washington, D.C.
Ann Barnet, M.D. is Professor Emeritus in Pediatrics and Neurology at George Washington University School of Medicine. She attended Harvard Medical School and received advanced training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.. Now retired from medical practice, Ann headed EEG research and the Evoked Response Laboratory at Children’s National Medical Center. She founded The Family Place, an education and social support center for low-income families with young children, and The Family Place Public Charter School, which offers bi-generational educational opportunities to parents and children.
Numerous reports concerning her research on brain development in children have appeared in scientific journals; she has written, as well, for publications such as The Nation and Sojourners. With Richard J. Barnet, she published The Youngest Minds: Parenting and Genes in the Development of Intellect and Emotion. Her advocacy and community service includes a term on the Washington, D.C Mayor’s Commission for Women and Girls. She is the recipient of research awards and community service awards from organizations including the National Institutes of Health, the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, and the Center to Prevent Childhood Malnutrition. She was inducted in 2015 into the Washington Women’s Hall of Fame, part of the DC Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy Initiatives. Dr. Barnet is associated with the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. (Richard Barnet was a co-founder of IPS.) She has served on Boards including the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, Jubilee JumpStart, and the Festival Center. Dr Barnet lives in Silver Spring, MD. Her three children and their families live nearby. She is a member of the 8th Day Faith Community in Washington, D.C..
